Lightweight Schist Cladding for the Hilton Hotel, Queenstown

In 2010 Island Stone NZ embarked on a major commercial supply and installation project with what was, at the time, our newly developed Lightweight Stone Cladding System using Schist from the Central Otago region.

With over 3,000m2 of exterior cladding and internal fire-surround features, the Architect and Project Management Company were seeking a lightweight solution to this extensive use of Schist from the local Gibbston Valley quarry.

After a significant amount of testing by Opus International, including Freeze-Thaw testing, our revolutionary system of cutting this iconic New Zealand stone to a thin facing (25-40mm), then individually gluing each piece of stone to an approved substrate, was formally specified for this landmark resort complex.  The light and flexible cladding system that looks just like solid stone, but uses as little as 25% of the stone required for a conventional schist installation, was the ideal solution for this multi-storied development nestled into the hills surrounding Lake Wakatipu.

Since this milestone project, Island Stone NZ has gone on to supply and/or lay over 30,000m2 of Lightweight NZ Stone Cladding, the majority of it Central Otago Schist, but in the last four years this has grown to include Te Kuiti Limestone, and more recently Auckland Basalt. The photos above are a mixture of the finished project, and some work-in-progress shots, which show just how challenging the site and the project in general was.
